Three generations, one pork value chain

Prime Pork is the abattoir at the heart of the GTG Fourie group — a third-generation family farming business continuing a legacy that began more than 70 years ago.

“My grandfather started the piggery as a side business to chicken farming, and now the farm has been in business for more than 70 years.” What began as a sideline has grown into a diversified agricultural company focused on milling, primary production, and slaughtering and processing within the pork value chain.

Today, brothers Charlie and Deon Fourie — working alongside their father Charles — are continuing the family legacy by running a sustainable farming business. The group employs a diverse workforce on the farm in Potchefstroom, as well as at its latest addition: the Prime Pork abattoir and South Pork Piggery near Randfontein.

In 2024, the Fourie family bought the abattoir from the RussellStone Group and opened this latest addition to the business on 1 September 2024. The investment reflects a clear philosophy: to stay ahead of the curve, farmers need to invest in genetics and focus on value-adding across the chain — breeding high-health animals, managing every process tightly, and delivering a product the family can be proud of.
